Yoruba Beaded Sashes, Nigeria, cloth, beads, cowrie shells. Often considered the masters of beadwork on the African continent the Yoruba excel in colorful, meticulous work as seen in these sashes. They are decorated with faces, animals and various geometric patterns. Some are shaped overall as crocodiles. Beads and cowrie shells are considered signs of wealth and status. Originally Yoruba sashes were sheaths for Oko iron staffs. Today they are used decoratively.
