Baule Figure, Ivory Coast

Baule Figure, Ivory Coast, metal, 59" x 15.5". 26" height x 6" width, wood, cloth. Baule Religion is largely based on ancestor worship, and statues of this type are important to house ancestor spirits and provide a place for propitiation. This Blolo Bla (spirit wife) would reside in a household and, properly cared for, would help the family in all manners of life. Baule carvers are known for their expressive faces and graceful forms. Though conforming to classic figure types, Baule carvers are known to be highly individualistic, expressing themselves in the facial expression, treatment of the hair and patterns of scarification. Elaborate scarification and the elongated almost somber face on this work make this a fine example of Baule expression. Hands on the belly is gesture of peace as well as an allusion to fertility. Wonderful braid on back of the head. Side braids have broken off, otherwise good condition despite general signs of wear.
