Benin Bronze Figure with Spear, Nigeria

Benin Bronze Figure with Spear, Nigeria, 20" x 10.5", bronze. All Benin art is royal as opposed to tribal which is to say made for the king as opposed to ritual use in the village. Famous for the sophistication of their work, the Benin bronzes have awed the Western world since the 15th century. Working within a tradition dating back to the 13th century the Benin still sculpt their figures by hand and cast them in the "lost wax" process. Europe was so impressed with the quality of craftsmanship when they saw these pieces in the 15th century they thought they must have been from an earlier Portuguese influence. When that was disproved they thought the Egyptians may have been involved until it was proved that there was a tradition in that area dating back to the 13th century which the Benin had improved upon. It was, after all, an indigenous West African tradition. This exquisite figure with spear and bow is sculpted in fine detail. The figure and pose are classic from the high period of Benin art in the 15th century. 80 years old. Good condition.
