The exceedingly wide butterfly headdresses were danced at agricultural fertility rites and at funerals. Heavy and wide the dancer must be strong and given a wide girth. Despite the weight of the headdress the dancer's costume and movements created an airy floating butterfly-like feel. The geometric designs have symbolic meaning, most notably the checkerboard pattern represents the relation between light and dark, good and evil, and man and women. Good condition.
