Makonde Female Face Mask, Tanzania wood, hair, pigment, 10.5" x 7.5" The Makonde are known for realistic masks as opposed to the stylized and abstract designs which are more common throughout Africa. Makonde masks are used in initiation ceremonies for boys and girls as well as for agricultural fertility rites. Face masks of the Makonde often use real hair. Male masks tend to have beards while female masks such as this one have the upper lip elongated by a lip plate, a symbol of beauty and an indicator of social status. Some hair has come off otherwise good condition.
