Dan Mask with Headdress, Liberia/Ivory Coast

Dan Mask with Headdress, Liberia/Ivory Coast, mask is 15" x 13", (headdress is 39" long), wood, cloth, raffia, cowrie shells, hair, feathers, leather. This mask was most likely danced at festivals and public entertainments. It is often associated with and used in the famous Dan stilt dances (which today are predominately performed for tourists). The headdress is exotic with feathers, real hair, old cloth and cowrie shells. The wood face is one of the finer carvings of this type. It has a rich patina with subtle soft features about the eyes, mouth and forehead. This graceful and exotic mask and headdress has some age to it but is in excellent condition.
